For our latest Employee Spotlight, we’re getting to know Joy Akinbuwa and learning a little more about the background and interests she brings to our team.

Originally from Nigeria, Joy moved to Canada when she was 19 and eventually made New Brunswick home. She comes from a family of five and has three sisters who now live in three different countries, making staying connected across borders a regular part of family life.

Joy attended the University of New Brunswick, where she studied Mechanical Engineering with a specialization in Mechatronics. Her studies covered everything from calculus and thermodynamics to machine design, controls and mechatronics applications, giving her experience across a wide range of engineering disciplines.

For Joy, the decision to pursue engineering started with a genuine curiosity about moving parts and understanding how things work. As she progressed through her degree, that interest grew to include coding and the possibilities that come with being able to design something and then bring it to life.

That eventually led her to specialize in Mechatronics, where she could combine mechanical engineering with programming and automation. It was a natural fit for someone interested not only in how things work mechanically, but also in how technology can be used to control, automate and improve them.

Outside of engineering, Joy likes to stay active. Lifting, Pilates, running, hiking and tennis are all on the list, so there’s usually something keeping her moving. She also enjoys learning French and spending time with friends.

From Nigeria to New Brunswick, Joy has followed her curiosity about how things work into a career in engineering, combining mechanical design, technology and problem-solving along the way.

We’re glad to have Joy and her skills as part of our team and to put the Employee Spotlight on her!
